SKU: INFAO153 Category:

The cherry barb (Puntius titteya) is a tropical fish belonging to the spotted barb genus of the Cyprinidae family. It is native to Sri Lanka, and introduced populations have become established in Mexico and Colombia. The cherry barb was named Puntius titteyaby Paules Edward Pieris Deraniyagala in 1929. Synonyms include Barbus titteya and Capoeta titteya.

In aquariums Cherry Barbs can grow to be about 2″ long, including their tails. Most Cherry Barbs are active swimmers and are rarely aggressive. Recommended tank mates for Cherry Barbs include, other smaller Barbs, Rainbowfish, Danios, small Gouramis, and many other small to medium size aquarium fish. Cherry Barbs are most comfortable at about 74 degrees F with a pH of about 7 with moderate hardness. It is best to house these fish in at least a  30-gallon aquarium, but bigger is better. Cherry Barbs don’t need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4″ thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
